Etymology: < scientific Latin perianthium (17th cent. in Ray: see note below) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4), after ancient Greek περικάρπιον pericarpium n.2 Compare perianth n.The use of the word in English derives from Ray:1686 J. Ray Historia Plantarum I. 16 Partes floris sunt. 1. Calyx sive Perianthium, quod tamen nonnullis adjunctum potius quam pars floris censetur. Ray, however, adopted the term from Joachim Jung (d. 1657) Isagoge phytoscopica (1678) xiii. sig. C 2v. In sense 2 after scientific Latin perianthium (C. F. B. de Mirbel Traité d'anat. physiol. végétale (1802) II. 154); compare French périanthe in the same work.

1807 Trans. Linn. Soc. 8 5 He [sc. Mirbel] also proposes that the integument of all flowers, whether it be one or two, should in future be described by the common name of Perianthium, including both Calyx and Corolla under that appellation.
1832 J. Lindley Introd. Bot. i. ii. 113 The word Perianthium signifies the calyx and corolla combined, and is therefore strictly a collective term. It should only be employed to designate a calyx and corolla, the limits of which are undefined, so that they cannot be satisfactorily distinguished from each other.
