Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Patavīnitās.
Etymology: < classical Latin Patavīnitās the dialectal characteristics of the Latin of ancient Patavium (Padua), provincial style < Patavīnus (see Patavine n. and adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Italian patavinità (14th cent.), Middle French, French patavinité (1538). Compare earlier Paduanism n. at Paduan n. and adj. Derivatives.
The dialectal characteristics of the Latin of ancient Patavium (Padua), esp. as found in Livy's writings; (gen.) provincial style. Also: an instance of this, a provincial word or usage. Cf. Paduanism n. at Paduan n. and adj. Derivatives.

1661 T. Blount Glossographia (ed. 2) (at cited word) Livy was censured by Asinius for Patavinity in his writings, by which was meant that he had too much used the phrases or affectations of Padua, and neglected those of Rome.
