Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French patart.
Etymology: < Middle French, French patart, patard small coin of little value (1429), alteration, by suffix substitution (compare -ard suffix), of patac pataca n. (perhaps compare Old Occitan patar, cited at that entry). Compare post-classical Latin patardus (in an undated text in Du Cange).
Now historical.
A copper coin used in Flanders and Picardy from the 16th to the 18th cent.
