Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative of the bird's call. Compare earlier peesweep n., peewit n., wype n., later peewee n.1With the β. forms compare wype n. and perhaps also pie n.1 For the motivation for Butler's use in sense 2 compare the following (although compare also peewit land n. at peewit n. Compounds):1966 S. H. Burton in S. Butler Way of All Flesh (new ed.) 391 (note) ‘Piewipes’ is a dialect word for lapwings—birds that are noted for building nests so well camouflaged that they are very difficult to see. The sense seems to be that the Battersby ‘piewipes’ are moorlands; barren featureless land affording natural camouflage.
Chiefly British regional (chiefly Lincolnshire and East Anglian).
