Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paysage.
Etymology: < French paysage representation of landscape in painting (1549 as paisage in Middle French), countryside (1556), landscape as an object for contemplation (1573), landscape painting as a genre (1680), literary description of nature (1935) < pays country (see pais n.) + -age -age suffix. Compare Italian paesaggio (1552; < French). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (peizā·ʒ) /peiˈzɑːʒ/.
1. A representation in painting of a rural scene or landscape. Now rare.
