Etymology: Probably < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Swedish pirig , Swedish regional pirug poor, meagre, thin (compare also Faroese pírin stingy, niggardly, Norwegian (Nynorsk) piren niggardly, scrawny, slight, thin) < the same Scandinavian base as Icelandic píra small piece, bit, Faroese píra miser, Norwegian pir small mackerel, Swedish regional pir small mackerel, apparently related to West Frisian pier , Middle Dutch pier (Dutch pier ), Middle Low German pīr (German regional (Low German) Pier ), all in sense ‘worm’; further etymology uncertain. Compare peedie adj.Occasional attestations outside Orkney, Shetland, and Caithness (chiefly in hypocoristic contexts and reduplicative formations, e.g. peerie-weerie ) may represent a different word; perhaps compare peewee n.² and adj., peelie adj.
