Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < classical Latin pector-, pectus breast (see pectus n.) + a suffix of uncertain origin (perhaps compare -oon suffix); R. Barret (in the glossary to Theorike & Pract. Mod. Warres (1598): compare quot. 1598) assumes transmission via French, but no corresponding French word has been found. Compare pectoral n. 1b, and earlier peytral n., poitrel n.
