Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pastis.

Etymology: < French pastis (although this is apparently first attested slightly later in the relevant sense: †pastisse (1928), pastis (1931)), transferred use of French pastis confused affair, hotchpotch, mess (1916 or earlier, originally soldiers' slang) < Occitan pastís in same sense (second half of the 19th cent. or earlier in this sense), transferred use of pastís pasty, pie (14th–15th cent. in Old Occitan as pastis , pastitz ) < post-classical Latin pasticium (see pasticcio n., which compare also for the semantic development). The drink was apparently so named in allusion to the fact that it turns cloudy when mixed with water, the water thus ‘causing trouble’ to the alcohol.Occitan pastís is apparently not recorded in sense ‘liqueur flavoured with aniseed’.
