Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin passulatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin passulatus flavoured with raisins (1363 in Chauliac) < passula (plural) dried grapes, raisins (a1250, 1424 in British sources; < classical Latin passa (in ūva passa raisin: see pass n.2) + -ula , plural of -ulum -ule suffix) + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin passullare to fix vines on to supporting frames (1260). Compare Italian passola raisin (a1342). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·siŭlĕt) /ˈpæsjʊlət/.
Obsolete. rare.
Flavoured with or containing raisins.
