Etymology: Probably < an unattested Middle French passe-parole (compare French passe-parole (1622)) < passe- (see pass- comb. form) + parole parol n. Compare Italian passaparola (1614), apparently after the French.
Military. Obsolete. rare.
An order given by the commanding officer of an army, which is passed on verbally from soldier to soldier.
