Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French passe-dix.
Etymology: < French passe-dix (1542 in Middle French in Rabelais; also in sense ‘card game, in which the aim is to score over ten with two or three cards’ (first half of the 16th cent.); < passe- (see pass- comb. form) + dix ten: see dizain n.), apparently with the second element apprehended as dice , plural of die n.1 Compare Italian passa-dieci (1598 in Florio in dice sense).
