Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian parlatorio.
Etymology: < Italian parlatorio (early 14th cent.) < parlat- , past participial stem of parlare parle v. + -orio (see -ory suffix1). In some later uses perhaps after post-classical Latin parlatorium or Spanish parlatorio (see parlour n.). Compare earlier parlour n. 1.
Now rare.
The reception room or room for conversation in a convent. Hence also: †conversation (obsolete rare).
