Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymons: party n., -ocracy comb. form.
Etymology: < part- (in party n.) + -ocracy comb. form, probably after Russian partokratija. Compare partocratic adj. and later partocrat n.
Politics. Now chiefly historical.
Government or rule by a single political party without opposition; totalitarianism; spec. government by the Communist Party in Russia and the Soviet Union (1917–91). Also (collectively): the people constituting such a government.
