Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman partisun, parteisun, partison and Old French partison (c1170; also partisson ) partition, separation, departure ( < partir part v. + -ison -ison suffix), with alteration of the ending after -ing suffix1. Compare classical Latin partītiōn- , partītiō partition n.
