Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit parikrama, parikramā.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Sanskrit parikrama (masculine) walking about or around (in late Sanskrit in sense ‘circumambulation’) < pari around, about + krama going. In sense 2 < modern Sanskrit parikramā (feminine) circumambulation, perimeter path round a sacred place ( > Hindi parikramā in the same senses).The formation of modern Sanskrit parikramā as a feminine seems to be after late Sanskrit pradakṣiṇā pradakshina n. < Sanskrit paradakṣiṇa.
1. In various religious and philosophical traditions originating in India: the action or ritual of moving clockwise round an object of devotion as an indication of reverence; circumambulation; (also) an instance of this. Cf. pradakshina n.
