Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin parietina.
Etymology: < scientific Latin parietina, specific epithet of the lichen Xanthoria parietina from which the compound was obtained (see quot. 1844) < post-classical Latin parietinus of or belonging to walls (Vulgate) < classical Latin pariet- , pariēs wall (see paries n.) + -īnus -ine suffix1; compare -in suffix1.
Chemistry.
An orange-yellow compound which is an anthraquinone derivative and occurs as a pigment in some lichens; 1,8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methylanthraquinone, C16H12O5.
