Etymology: < post-classical Latin particeps criminis (6th cent.) < classical Latin particeps participant, accomplice (see participate v.) + crīminis , genitive of crīmen crime (see crime n.).Compare particeps in isolated use in this sense in Older Scots:a1600 ( W. Stewart tr. H. Boece Bk. Cron. Scotl. (1858) 35811 Ane prenteis..also of that cryme Wes particeps.
