释义

pargon.

Brit. /ˈpɑːɡəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpɑrɡoʊ/
Inflections: Plural pargos, pargoes, unchanged.

Etymology: Partly < Spanish pargo, properly the common sea bream, Pagrus pagrus, but applied to other fish, in combination with adjectives designating various kinds of snappers (1520, perhaps originally a Mozarabic form), and partly < Portuguese pargo properly the common sea bream but occasionally applied to other fish (13th cent.), both apparently < classical Latin pagrus (also pager , phager , phagrus ) a kind of fish < ancient Greek ϕάγρος a kind of fish, of uncertain origin (perhaps < Hellenistic Greek (Cretan) ϕάγρος whetstone (of unknown origin); the fish was said by ancient etymologists to have hard teeth to facilitate its diet of oysters). Compare Catalan pagre (1379), Occitan pagre (1554), Middle French, French pagre (1505), Italian pagro (a1498; > Maltese pagro ). Compare porgy n.
