Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: passion n., play n.
Etymology: < passion n. + play n., after German Passionsspiel (also in early modern German; compare Middle High German passiōn a passion play).
1. A mystery play representing the events of Christ's Passion; esp. that performed by the residents of Oberammergau, Germany, approximately once a decade since 1634. Also in extended use, with reference to non-Christian religious dramas.
