单词 passerine
释义

passerineadj.n.

Brit. /ˈpasərʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈpæsəˌraɪn/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin passer , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin passer sparrow (see Passeres n.) + -ine suffix1. In sense A. 1 after scientific Latin Passer, genus name (M. J. Brisson Ornithologie (1760) III. 72, after earlier post-classical Latin Passer : see Passeres n.). In sense A. 2 after scientific Latin passerinus sparrow-like, specific name (as in Psittacus passerinus (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 103)) < classical Latin passerīnus of or for sparrows. In sense B. after scientific Latin Passerinae, former order name (H. McMurtrie Cuvier's Animal Kingdom (1834) 123, rendering French passereaux). Compare French passerin sparrow-like (1611, now obsolete), French regional (Provence) passerine whitethroat (1778), French passerine bird of the order Passeriformes (1874).
Ornithology.
A. adj.
1. Of or relating to the large order Passeriformes (formerly Passeres), which comprises birds with feet adapted for perching and includes all the songbirds. The order Passeriformes was formerly restricted to the oscine passerines (now known as the suborder Passeri, Passeres, or Oscines); cf. oscines n. 2. In its wider sense the passerines constitute more than half of known bird species, and members of all other orders are known as non-passerines. Because all the passerines in Europe are oscines, the term effectively designates songbirds there.
