Etymology: < Middle French parentele a person's family or ancestors (end of the 14th cent. as parentel , 1451 as parentelle ; the sense ‘kinship, consanguinity’ does not occur in French until 1580; French parentèle ) and its etymon post-classical Latin parentela relationship (see parentela n.).
