Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French acaule , -ous suffix; Latin acaulis , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < French acaule or its etymon post-classical Latin acaulis (for both, see acauline adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier acaulose adj.
