Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pardonaunce (early 12th cent. as pardunance ; compare Anglo-Norman and Old French pardonance (13th cent.), Old French, Middle French pardonnance (c1280)) < pardoner pardon v. + -aunce -ance suffix. Compare Occitan perdonança (12th cent. or earlier in Old Occitan), Italian perdonanza (first half of the 13th cent. or earlier; now archaic), Portuguese perdoança (13th cent.), Spanish pardonanza (1274 or earlier as perdonança ; in later use limited to specialized collocations), Catalan perdonança (1296 or earlier), post-classical Latin perdonantia (1441 in a British source).
