Etymology: < La Pasionaria, nickname of Dolores Ibárruri Gómez (1895–1989), Basque Communist leader renowned for her emotional oratory and colourful personality < Spanish pasionaria passion-flower (1737 as passionaria ; compare passion flower n.) < pasión (see passion n.) + -aria (see -ary suffix1).
A popular female leader or figurehead for a political or other cause. Also La Pasionaria.
