Etymology: < post-classical Latin pascualis of or relating to pastureland (Vulgate; from 8th cent. in British sources; a1150 in a British source with reference to plants) < classical Latin pāscuum grazing (see pascuous adj.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin pascuale (noun) pastureland (2nd–3rd cent.), grazing animals (Vetus Latina). Compare Middle French pascualle, pascuelle pastoral (1444), pascual rich in grass (1540).

Originally: of or relating to pastureland. Later, of a plant (in H. C. Watson's terminology): growing in pasture or sheep-grazed grassland. Obsolete.
