Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian pāzan.
Etymology: < Persian pāzan mountain goat, of uncertain origin; compare Zoroastrian Pahlavi pāčan. Compare Portuguese pazam (1563 in Garcia de Orta Coloquios dos Simples, which (incorrectly) connects the word with a form pazar bezoar).The Persian word seems not to be in current spoken or recent literary use. N.E.D. (1904) enters this under pasan, pasang and gives the pronunciation (pā·zăn, -ăŋ) /ˈpɑːzən/, /-əŋ/.
