Etymology: < Anglo-Norman parcheminer (compare Old French, Middle French parcheminier (late 13th cent.; compare French regional (Marseilles) pargamentier ) < parchemin parchment n. + -er -er suffix2. In β. forms after parchment n. Compare post-classical Latin pargaminarius (9th cent.), parcamenarius (from 12th cent. in British sources), pergamenarius , pergaminerius (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources), Old Occitan pargamenier (Occitan pergaminièr , also pergamentièr ), Catalan pergaminer (1350), Spanish pergaminero (1274), also Middle Dutch parcamenter , Old High German pergamināri (Middle High German pergamener , pergamenter ). Compare parchment maker n. at parchment n. Compounds 2.Attested earlier as a surname, although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as Middle English or Anglo-Norman: Gille Parcheminer (1181). In form pergemener perhaps after post-classical Latin pergaminerius (see above).
