Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French perce pierre.
Etymology: < Middle French, French perce pierre Aphanes arvensis, literally ‘pierce-stone’ (see percepier n.), with alteration of the first element after parsley n., arising from the resemblance of the leaves to parsley. Compare percepier n. and earlier stonebreak n., saxifrage n., slightly later pierce-stone n., and later parsley breakstone n. at parsley n. Compounds 2 (compare quot. 1728).
Either of two low-growing annuals of the genus Aphanes (family Rosaceae), with fan-shaped, deeply palmate or trifid leaves and minute green axillary flowers; esp. A. arvensis, found on sandy or bare ground and as an arable weed. Formerly also: †annual knawel, Scleranthus annuus (obsolete). Cf. parsley breakstone n. at parsley n. Compounds 2.
