Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: para- prefix2, vane n.
Etymology: < para- prefix2 + vane n. Compare hydrovane n.The device was developed by Lt. D. Burney of the experimental destroyer H.M.S. Velox and first fitted to regular naval vessels in 1915; compare quot. 1916.
A device towed behind a boat at a depth regulated by its vanes or planes, so that the cable to which it is attached can cut the moorings of submerged mines. Hence, in extended use: any similar vaned device towed by a boat for some other purpose, as to provide stability, collect data, etc.In quot. 1959: a towing device used by aircraft in the interception of missiles.

The name Paravane has been given to any stream line body fitted with hydrovanes.
1920 Rep. Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 1919 273 The Paravane has been developed as a weapon to fulfill two purposes:—(1) To attack a submarine. (2) To protect vessels from moored mines.

1959 J. L. Nayler Dict. Aeronaut. Engin. 186 Paravane,... This device is used at Woomera, towed behind an aircraft, in snatch recovery methods for intercepting guided missiles towards the end of their flights.
1984 Yachting (Nexis) Sept. 88 Paravene roll-control systems seem to have originated in the Pacific salmon-trolling fishery, among 30- to 40-footers manned by crews of only two or so. Paravanes enabled such boats to continue trolling despite heavy weather.
2003 This is Lancs. (Nexis) 17 June The works..were used by the Admiralty to store large quantities of floats for anti-submarine and torpedo nets and Paravanes for mine sweeping.
