Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: para- prefix1, -trophic comb. form.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + -trophic comb. form. In sense 1, after paratrophy n. In sense 2, after German paratroph (A. Fischer Vorlesungen über Bakterien (1897) v. 47; compare quot. 1900 at sense 2). Compare paratrophy n.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857 at sense 1) gives a Latin form paratrophicus.
Medicine and Biology. Now rare.
