Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin paratripsis ; Greek παράτριψις , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paratripsis rubbing, chafing or its etymon ancient Greek παράτριψις rubbing against one another, friction ( < παρα- para- prefix1 + τρίψις rubbing ( < τρίβειν to rub (see tribo- comb. form) + -σις -sis suffix); compare ancient Greek παρατρίβειν to rub on or against) + -ic suffix. With sense A. 2 perhaps compare also para- prefix2.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 18571) gives a Latin form paratripticus. N.E.D. (1904) also records at para-1 a lemma paratripsis, but this seems in fact to be recorded only as a Latin word; compare:1857 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) Paratripsis, term for friction, or rubbing against one another.1857 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) Paratripticus,..of or relating to Paratripsis. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pærătri·ptik) /pærəˈtrɪptɪk/.
