Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Latin tragoedia; Greek τραγῳδία.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + classical Latin tragoedia or its etymon ancient Greek τραγῳδία tragedy n., after Hellenistic Greek παρατράγῳδος mock-tragic or ancient Greek παρατραγῳδεῖν to use a mock-tragic style (see paratragediate v.).
Literary Criticism. Now rare.
Parody of the tragic style or genre; mock-tragedy.
