Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek -τόμος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek -τόμος (see -tome comb. form) + -ous suffix, after German paratom (F. Mohs Grundriss der Mineralogie (1824) II. 306; compare quot. 1825).
Mineralogy. Obsolete.
Of a mineral: exhibiting cleavage parallel to the primary plane; designating cleavage of this kind.
