Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pas de quatre.
Etymology: < French pas de quatre (1845 as the title of a ballet divertissement) < pas step (see pace n.1) + de de prep. + quatre four (see quatre n.). Compare earlier pas de deux n., pas de trois n.
Dance (esp. Ballet).
A dance for four people. Also in extended use.
