Etymology: < Middle French, French parier (1549 in sense ‘to bet, stake’; 1313 as pariier in sense ‘compare’) < per , pair (see peer n. and adj.) with remodelling after classical Latin pariāre (see pariation n.).
Obsolete. rare.
