Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin parvus , albumin n.
Etymology: < classical Latin parvus small (see parvi- comb. form) + albumin n. (see quot. 1968).
Biochemistry.
A calcium-binding muscle protein of low molecular weight found in some vertebrates. Formerly also: any of a homologous group of such proteins.

Biochem. & Physiol. 24 294 Their constancy among the proteins considered is favourable to the presumption that they may have a common genic origin, and suggests that the myogen of lower vertebrates is thus a rich and convenient source of a new class of homologous proteins. The general name of parvalbumins is proposed here for these proteins.
1974 Nature 20 Dec. 646/1 The only muscle protein whose three-dimensional structure is known is a calcium binding protein from carp (CBP), often called parvalbumin.
