Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek πτερόν.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek πτερόν wing (see ptero- comb. form), after French paraptère (V. Audouin 1824, in Ann. des sci. nat. 1 122).
Entomology. Now rare.
Any of several small lateral sclerites of the thoracic segments of an insect, esp. those associated with the wing bases. Also: a tegula or patagium. Chiefly in plural.

1957 O. W. Richards & R. G. Davies Imms's Gen. Textbk. Entomol. (ed. 9) i. 39 The tegulae (paraptera of some authors) are a pair of small scale-like sclerites carried at the extreme base of the costa of each fore wing.
