Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Parsettensit.

Etymology: < German Parsettensit (J. Jakob 1923, in Schweiz. min. u. petrogr. Mitt. 3 227) < the name of Alp Parsettens , the locality in Val d'Err, Graubünden, south-eastern Switzerland, where it was first found + -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A basic orthorhombic silicate of manganese, (Mn₅Si₆)₁₃(OH)₈, that often contains appreciable amounts of potassium and occurs as copper-red masses.

1924 Mineral. Abstr. 2 251 Parsettensite..occurs as a filling in rather thick veins.

1962 W. A. Deer et al. Rock-forming Minerals III. 103 Parsettensite..was shown by Fankuchen..to be a manganese stilpnomelane, and it is proposed to retain this name to describe varieties rich in manganese.

1977 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) A. 286 512 Out of 13 stilpnomelane analyses compiled by the latter authors, only one gives MnO-values exceeding 3.08%—and that is of parsettensite from Val d'Err, Graubünden.

2000 European Jrnl. Mineral. 12 341 In the wall rock..the braunite + quartz assemblage is replaced by Mn silicates (mainly bementite, johannsenite, parsettensite and rhodonite) and carbonates.
