Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: parrot n.1, fish n.1
Etymology: < parrot n.1 + fish n.1, so called in senses a and c on account of the hard beak-like mouth formed by fusion of the front teeth, and in sense b on account of the brilliant colouring.
(a) Any of various beaked fishes constituting the tropical family Scaridae, esp. of the genera Scarus and Sparisoma, which feed by scraping coral and algae from coral reefs. (b) Chiefly Australian and New Zealand. Any of several brightly coloured fishes of the family Labridae; a wrasse. (c) Chiefly South African. The edible beaked fish Oplegnathus conwayi (family Oplegnathidae), of the southern Indian Ocean; also called Cape knifejaw.
