Etymology: < ancient Greek παραπληκτικός suffering from hemiplegia < παράπληκτος suffering from hemiplegia ( < (non-Attic) παραπλήσσειν (Attic παραπλήττειν ) to strike with palsy (see paraplegia n.) + -τος , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin paraplecticus (1743 or earlier). In Compounds after scientific Latin paraplecticus (1758 as a specific name). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pærăple·ktik) /pærəˈplɛktɪk/.
