Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek ϕύσις.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek ϕύσις growth (see physis n.), after post-classical Latin paraphysis (1794 or earlier). In sense 2 after German Paraphysis (E. Selenka 1890, in Biol. Centralbl. 10 324). Compare French paraphyse (1859 or earlier in sense 1).
1. Botany. A sterile filament or hair present among the reproductive organs in many algae, fungi, lichens, and bryophytes, and in certain ferns. Also: †a filament of the corona of a passion flower (obsolete).
