Etymology: < post-classical Latin paraphrenitis (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684 at main sense) < para- para- prefix1 + phrenitis phrenitis n. Compare earlier paraphrenesis n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pærăfrĭnəi·tis) /pærəfrɪˈnaɪtɪs/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Originally: madness or delirium attributed to inflammation of the diaphragm. Later: inflammation of the diaphragmatic pleura. Also: an instance of such madness or such inflammation. Cf. paraphrenesis n.
