Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: French paraphernel ; paraphernal adj.
Etymology: < Middle French paraphernel, parapharnel, paraphernal (French paraphernal ), adjective (15th cent. in biens parapharnelz paraphernal goods, married woman's paraphernalia; compare Old Occitan (Gascon) bes parafernals (1343 or earlier), Catalan béns parafernals (1330)) < post-classical Latin paraphernalis paraphernal adj. In later use perhaps independently < paraphernal adj. Compare French paraphernal, noun (1765).
Scottish in later use. Now rare.
In plural. A married woman's paraphernalia (see paraphernalia n. 1). By extension (Scottish): miscellaneous belongings; odds and ends, bits and pieces. Also occasionally in singular: an item of paraphernalia.
