Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian passata.
Etymology: < Italian passata (vegetable) puree, mash (1923 or earlier), feminine form corresponding to passato (1870; 1353 in sense ‘time that has gone by’), use as noun of passato , past participle of passare pass v.
Cookery.
A purée of tomatoes. More fully tomato passata.
