Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Or (iii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: apparel n.; French parail; French apparail.

Compare post-classical Latin parella (c1450). Compare parel n.Quot. 1295 could alternatively be interpreted as showing an (apparently otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman parallel.
