Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek ὀστέον bone (see osteo- comb. form) + -osis suffix. Compare parosteal adj., exostosis n., hyperostosis n., enostosis n., synostosis n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pærǫstōu·sis) /pærɒˈstəʊsɪs/.
Medicine and Zoology. Obsolete.
A bony formation that arises outside the periosteum.
