Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French parement (c1177 in Old French in sense ‘ornament, adornment’, 1318 in sense ‘altar hanging’; compare parures (plural) fine clothing (late 9th cent.)) and its etymon post-classical Latin paramentum royal state, throne (9th cent.), ecclesiastical dress, sacred furniture (10th cent.), shroud (11th cent.) < classical Latin parāre to prepare (see pare v.1) + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare paramento n.In chamber of parament n. at sense 2 after Middle French chambre de parement (a1393).
