Etymology: Alteration of patience n.², after passion n.The plant patience ( Rumex patientia) was cultivated early for its leaves eaten as vegetables. The name was subsequently associated by popular etymology with Passiontide (compare passion dock n.) and transferred to bistort, which was also in some parts used as a pot-herb.

Obsolete.
