Etymology: < passion n. + -ist suffix, probably after Italian passionista (1806). Compare French passionniste (1834).The full name of the order in English is Congregation of the Discalced Clerks of the most Holy Cross and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ (in post-classical Latin Congregatio clericorum excalceatorum SS. Crucis et Passionis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, in Italian Congregazione de' chierici scalzi della santissima croce, e passione di Gesù Cristo).
