Etymology: < post-classical Latin acarus (1546 or earlier; 1532 or earlier as acari ) < ancient Greek ἄκαρι mite < ἀκαρής minute, too short for cutting < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + καρ- , aorist stem of κείρειν to cut (see corm n.²). Compare French acare (1752; also acarus (1798 or earlier)).In plural form acari after the Latin plural form.
